Gravimetric Vibratory Channel Feeder for Explosive Powders: Engineered Solution for Safety and Reliability

Introduction

Handling explosive powders requires dosing systems designed according to stringent engineering criteria to ensure safety, reliability, and ease of cleaning.

For this application, General Dosing developed a dedicated configuration of its VF, VFW and VFY Series Gravimetric Vibratory Channel Feeders, featuring carefully selected materials, high-quality manufacturing processes, and technical specifications focused on maximum operational reliability.

Application

The system was developed for the dosing of explosive powders used in industrial processes where particular attention must be paid to the machine's construction features and the quality of its surface finishes.

Project Objective

The objective was to develop a gravimetric vibratory channel feeder that complies with the customer's construction specifications, with particular attention to:

  • Quality of product-contact surfaces;
  • Ease of cleaning;
  • Elimination of material accumulation points;
  • Reliability of mechanical assemblies;
  • Quality of manufacturing processes and surface finishes.

The Developed Solution

The solution was manufactured using AISI 304 stainless steel for all product-contact parts, featuring a mirror-polished finish.

Special attention was given to the design of the assemblies by eliminating gaps and inaccessible areas in order to prevent material build-up and ensure that every component can be cleaned easily.

The machine configuration was designed so that all surfaces remain easily accessible during cleaning and maintenance operations.

Materials and Construction Quality

To meet the required specifications, carefully selected materials and components were used.

The main construction features include:

  • AISI 304 stainless steel product-contact parts;
  • Mirror-polished surfaces;
  • Gap-free assemblies;
  • Components designed for easy cleaning;
  • Stainless steel wedge-lock washers on all mechanically assembled components.

Manufacturing Procedures

The machine was manufactured following procedures compliant with the standards specified in the project requirements.

In particular:

  • Welding procedures compliant with EN ISO 9692-1;
  • Qualified welders certified according to EN ISO 9606-1;
  • Welding consumables compliant with ISO 14175.

Surface Protection System

A dedicated coating system was specified for the external surfaces, consisting of:

  • Sa 2½ abrasive blast cleaning according to ISO 8501-1;
  • Polyurethane zinc phosphate primer;
  • Polyamide epoxy intermediate coating;
  • Conductive acrylic polyurethane topcoat.

The coating system is applied in accordance with the manufacturer's technical specifications, ensuring the minimum dry film thickness required for each coating layer.

Conclusion

This project represents an example of how the General Dosing VF, VFW and VFY Series Gravimetric Vibratory Channel Feeders can be customized to meet specific customer application requirements.

Through the careful selection of materials, attention to manufacturing quality, and the adoption of defined construction procedures, General Dosing developed a solution focused on construction quality, ease of cleaning, and machine reliability.
